Scientific studies, traditionally sheltered in insulated journals, are now quickly publicized in press releases, posted on Twitter and Face Book, and disseminated on YouTube, TED talks and TV. We are inundated with food and nutrition headlines, recommendations, claims and counter claims asserting the evidence to be based on the latest scientific research. It is essential that dietitians be able to distinguish between research studies that are relatively trustworthy, and those that are based on dicey research resulting in false narratives and junk science.
