The Weight of Bias: Understanding Implications and Consequences of Weight Bias in Healthcare

Weight stigma is a pernicious and pervasive problem in the United States affecting individuals from all walks of life and occurring across many settings, including healthcare. This talk will begin by reviewing the nature and extent of both implicit and explicit weight stigma and discrimination including defining these terms. Health consequences of experiencing weight stigma will be discussed, and this talk will review the state of the literature on weight bias in the healthcare setting.
