Objectives
Attendees will know:
1. How the new labeling regulations will impact Supplement Facts labels.
2. What are the major labeling changes and the importance of the dietitian in communicating these changes.
3. Why not all dietary supplement labels will be affected by the new regulations.
4. How to identify Supplement Facts labels that comply with the new regulations.

• 3100 Supplemental nutrients, botanicals
• 4030 Dietary guidelines, DRIs, Food Guide Pyramid, food labeling
Performance Indicators:
PI 1: 10.4 Applies knowledge of the interrelationship and impact of pharmacotherapy, dietary supplements, functional foods and nutrients on health and disease in accordance with Scope of Practice and Standards of Professional Performance for RDNs.
PI 2: 9.4 Teaches, guides and instructs a variety of individuals, groups or populations.
PI 3: 8.1 Interprets and applies current food and nutrition science and principles in dietetics practice.

Session Summary:
The new labeling regulations announced by the US Food and Drug Administration in May 2016 that go into effect in 2020 will impact on the label and labeling Daily Values (DVs) of almost all packaged food and beverage labels, and 52% of dietary supplement labels. This presentation will focus on how the new labeling regulations will impact Dietary Supplement Labels. Why most, but not all, labels will be affected by this change, and how to identify labels that comply with the new regulations.
Speaker Bio:
Leila Saldanha has over 30 years’ experience in packaged food and dietary supplements. She has served (since 2003) as a Scientific Consultant at the Office of Dietary Supplements at the National Institutes of Health. Leila was Vice President, Nutritional Sciences for the Consumer Healthcare Products Association, a trade organization representing manufacturers and distributors of non-prescription medicines and dietary supplement products. She has held several progressively responsible senior managerial roles during her 10 plus years at the Kellogg Company, including Director, Nutrition and Scientific Affairs for the AsiaPacific region based in Sydney, Australia. Leila is a Fellow and has been an active professional member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics since 1985. She is the current Webinar Chair of the Academy’s Indians in Nutrition and Dietetics, Member Interest Group.
